Guest Post: Rachel {My Wholesome Home}

Today I have a treat for you! My sister and I used to do what we titled "Sister Swap." It kinda fell off the wagon when summer came and we both got swamped and could hardly keep up with our own blogs, let alone an extra. But today she's back! Doubling as a Sister Swap and a fill in while I'm away!

I'm baaaaack! I know it's been awhile since I've Sister Swapped over here, but I have something extra awesome to make up for it ok? Because, please...look at those skewers, can we say tasty? The best part? It took me about 20 minutes total to make them-from opening the fridge to stuffing my face.

BBQ Chicken Shishkabobs
-favorite barbeque sauce
-fresh (or canned) pineapple chunks
-chicken breast
-skewer sticks

1. Start your barbeque.

2. Cut up the pineapple and chicken. I was eating solo this time, so for 4 skewers I used about 1/4 of a fresh pineapple and 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast. You want to make bite sized pieces.

3. Soak chicken in barbeque sauce. Ideally, you could do this overnight-the flavor would be a lot better. I forgot so just coated it. It was good, but not as good as marinading it would have been.

4. Alternate chicken and pineapple onto skewers. Leave room to hold the ends.

5. When barbeque is ready, put on grill. Cook about 6 minutes and flip. Cook for another 5-6 minutes.

6. Serve and enjoy!

It's summer, get out of the kitchen and get your grill on. Make sure to pop over and check out my other great recipes at My Wholesome Home.

My name is Caroline! I'm a lover of everything fashion and DIY and any good recipes. I blog over at the Love Caroline Blog. Top: Vender in NYC
Shorts: Target
Shoes: Cato
Shoulder bag: Vera Bradley
Hat: Target

I've been a real beach bum lately. I went to New York and went to the beach and then I've went to relax in Galveston, Texas at the beach. I can tell you that my fedora has been getting its full use at all the beaches and lakes that I've been to this summer.

This is one of my favorite beach bum outfits that I wore to the fourth of July while I was in Galveston. I spent my fourth of July chilling at the Rainforest Cafe, watching fire works with my family and this was the perfect outfit for all my activities for the day. It was literally a 100 degrees in Texas and it was an easy decisions to wear shorts and a light weight top for the day. I just got the NYC shirt from my trip to New York and since it sported red and white, I thought it was the perfect time to wear it.

Thanks again for having me over Naomi! I would love for any of y'all to check out my blog, the Love Caroline Blog

Guest Post: Jessica {Jeans and a Teacup}

Hi Patterned Love readers! I'm Jessica and my sister Megan and I blog over at Jeans and a Teacup. Naomi has kindly let us take over today while she is away...Mwahaha!   Ok, I promise nothing crazy, just a normal outfit post from me and some words from my sister!

Top: Foreign Exchange (similar), Tank: Marshalls (similar), Shorts: J.Crew Factory, Shoes: ShoeMint (similar), Purse: Thrifted, Necklace: J.Crew Factory (similar), Bracelet: Jeweliq, Lips: Sephora Love Test, Sunglasses: c/o Firmoo
This is typically what you'll find me wearing on a hot summer day - shorts and a tank top.  Sometimes I get frustrated in the summer since I can't add interest to my outfit by layering a lot of things.  So I added a breezy crochet top for some texture and tried to play with color for some interest.  And I added a bright lip color for some extra fun!

While I mainly post about silly things, like what I'm wearing that day, Megan brings a more reflective aspect to our blog and I'll let her take over now!
Cassie+Megan
Our cousin Cassie and Megan in Korea
Hi! I'm Megan - the other half of Jeans and a Teacup!
I recently went on vacation in South Korea. I had a great time with my cousin, who teaches English there, and loved observing Korean culture with her. We’re both obsessed with it for unknown reasons.

The shocker to it all is this: I didn’t come back any cooler.

I know, I was surprised too (just kidding—I wasn’t). I’ve noticed that people are impressed with my visit to Korea as if it was an accomplishment or makes me more interesting. That baffles me because all you need to be a world traveler is money and time, and neither thing inherently makes you awesome (as a disclaimer, I didn’t even have the money – my cousin generously paid for my flight).

What I’ve found is that experiences only change us if we’re in awe of our surroundings and hope and expect to grow from them. Through that, God opens mysteries to us and exposes the hidden places in our own hearts. But if we passively pass through our environment, assuming we have everything we need, we’ll stay the same, no matter what foreign land we step into.

I do think visiting another country can change you. But so can visiting your next-door neighbor. I spontaneously stopped by my neighbor’s house a while back and found her crying on her kitchen floor while eating frozen pizza and blasting pop music. The next three hours were pretty amazing. I heard her life story, plus looked at my own life story a little differently after seeing it from her view. That night taught me more than many of the days I’ve spent overseas.

I hope you get to travel if you haven’t already, but I also hope you walk around your neighborhood and linger at the counter of your favorite local coffee shop. I already think you’re awesome, but you might find some more awesome things just around the corner.

Thanks for stopping by!

See Ya Later

The fun things about this outfit:
Pants - Thrifted & Skinnied, Bracelet - Hand-Me-Down,
Shirt - Hand-Me-Down, Shoes - Target, Earrings - Nordstrom

Ok so this is my last July post. Next week will be filled with the wonderful & the fabulous ladies who have agreed to fill in for me.

Where am I going?

C.A.M.P.

That's right! Myself and one other female leader are taking 17 glorious high school girls to camp today. I leave at 11:30 and will be utterly unreachable!

It's so crazy to detach from the world as we know it for an entire 7 days. No cell phone... even if we wanted to, no service. No TV. No Movies. Just rocking it semi-resort style at the most legit Younglife camp ev's. We get to do things like racing go carts, high ropes courses, 50ft swings, play in the lake, the pool, and the blob. We get to spend incredible time with each other rock climbing, bike riding, messy-war-ing. And although I'm scared of height, I'm not a huge fan of water, and I'd rather my hair stay clean it all leads up to one thing each night. My favorite of all... we get to talking about Jesus!

So Give my girls some love next week while I'm gone!
And if you think of it, lift us up in prayer!

Romans 12:1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I Came To Get Down

The fun things about this outfit:
Jeans - Buckle, Shirt - Ross, Shoes - Old Navy, Bracelets - Thrifted $0.75

Quick side note. Even at regular stores I try to talk down the price.
These shoes were 50% off at the end of my discussion with the Old Navy cashier!

I've been noticing lately that I'm a little obsessed with jumping pictures.
No...Seriously.

When we're taking outfit shots, Hannah will ask me, "Did we miss anything?"
I've almost always started replying with, "Jumping?"

So clearly when I was getting these photos ready to post, I get Jump Around stuck in my head!

I came to get down, I came to get down
So get out your seats and jump around

Jump around, jump up and get down.

And...now it wont stop.
But while that little tune is on repeat in my noggin, I'll explain this black and white craziness happening above. While I was on a jumping kick the other day, Hannah introduced me to what the cool kids are apparently calling Vadering..

That's right folks. Vader has officially moved from being a name and become something you do. AND of course... we gave it a shot! Can I pretty please be considered a cool kid now?

Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Drink Up! {A Word Picture}

It's been crazy hot around here lately. I found myself thinking on the importance of drinking water for a second and quickly drew a parallel to life, that I'd like to share with you.

While at work I have one of those red/white twisty straw type water bottles always on my desk. (Either you know exactly what I'm talking about... or you have no clue.)

Sometimes I fill it up and it lasts me all day. Sometimes I fill it up multiple times a day. Sometimes I fill it up and it sits there...full. Who knows why, but I forget to drink it. It might be hidden behind my laptop, or I get busy and forget it's there. Sometimes I drink it all and think I've had plenty. Then it sits for days, empty. The longer it sits there empty, the less frequently I think, "Oh, I should drink water." Funny thing is, the water cooler is only about 10 feet away from my desk. Totally within reach, right? It's not like it's difficult to walk over an fill-er-up. In fact, it's easy, it's simple, it's good for me in the long run to be drinking water.

So, as I gaze out the huge windows across the front office, and look at the beautifully sunny day outside, I started thinking. I better stay hydrated! I'm going to the river later, and what if I DIE of dehydration? Dramatic, I know, but non-the-less the thought entered my mind.

At that thought I went and filled up my bottle!

I sat back down at my desk and my Bible sat on the edge. And my over-active imagination went to work, imagining my life as a water bottle. Although in my mind my Bible looked less like a water cooler and more like a deep fountain of gloriously delish nature water.

I'm sure you're tracking with me by now. There is, once again, a wonderful word picture here.

Imagination, you never fail me!

WATER:
How often do parents say to their kids on summer days, "Drink some water before you go outside." Children whine, "why?" and parents say, "It's good for you." (well, some say, "because I said so.")

When I take high schoolers to camp during the summer, leaders always fill their students cups with water before the students even have a chance to choose a seat. Tricky tricky? No, we just want them to have water before something else to drink, because we know they're in the sun all day. Not only that, leaders fill their glass too as the example.

Doctors and health coaches preach it all the time. Stay hydrated! It is essential for your body to function to it's fullest potential. We don't ignore them because we know their right. We do, indeed, drink water after we've been reminded by an article we read, a trainer at the gym, or... your mom. And if you're like me, regular reminders are more than welcome, because somehow we forget the importance of this essential liquid.

Sometimes when someone is visiting my house they ask if they can have some water. I sometimes always joke, "Nope, I ran out yesterday." Do they ever question it? No, they laugh and go fill their glass. Everyone knows that there is running water at our disposal whenever we want it. (in our culture anyways.)

So the parallel continues!
How often do we convince ourselves we don't NEED to spend time in the Bible before we head out into the world for the day, where the enemy clearly is plotting against us? Would you spend the entire day out in the sun without water? It's good for you. It's good for your soul. We fill up before we go, we fill up while we're there with potential harmful heat all around us.

How often do we encourage others to spend time in the Bible in the middle of all that is going on in life? Do we offer to walk along side them as we both dive into the Word? Some, if not all of us, need an example. Look to someone as your example, and be one to someone else.

How often do we go to church and hear truth from the pulpit only to head home without remembering what we heard? Aren't we beat after having a go at life all week? Didn't we attend church knowing we'd want to hear what was said? Why would we, parched from a day in the heat, go to a well and choose not to drink deeply from it to replenish our body? Would we stare into it and walk away thinking how lovely the well looked today, or how nicely the bucket was moving up and down, but forgetting to drink?

How often do we believe the lies that we aren't learning anything from the Bible? There is always something to learn. The Bible never runs dry. It is a constant source of encouragement, correction, and instruction. It doesn't run out.

So close so far.
So now that I've written this word picture out, I find myself asking: Why does my water bottle sit empty sometimes? The water cooler is so close to me. I guess sometimes I forget the water cooler is there. Sometimes I forget the bottle is there. Sometimes I'm just lazy or busy.

Too frequently in our lives, we find ourselves feeling lost in life. We feel overwhelmed, overworked, and stretched to thin. We're feeling dehydrated (figuratively) We forget where our source of hope lays, and where our saving grace is found. I pray often, asking that I would never forget. That I would always remember.

John 4:13-14
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 7:37-38
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Flip Flops Sometimes Have To Cut It.

The fun things about this outfit:
Shorts - Thrifted in 2006 and cut-off in 2012, Shirt - Thrifted & Refashioned, Flops - Old Navy

I know I'm not the only outfit blogger out there who thinks this.
Sometimes, ya just have to give in to a shorts and tank day. And to get really lazy, toss on some flippetty flops. We can't always be dresses and lovelies! But I say, whatever you wear, just own it! Be confident and be yourself!

You know what else I say. Summer rocks. My newest love is reading on the porch swing! Seriously. I'm loving it! And if you're a regular reader, you know I have a goal of reading 2 Narnia books this month. I'm halfway through my second (Voyage of the "Dawn Treader") with only days left to finish before I head to camp with my high school girls until August. Wish me some speedy reading luck!

Psalm 62:1-2
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

A Quarter Century

The fun things about this outfit:
Skirt - Thrifted ($5), Shirt - Ross, Shoes - Thrifted ($8), Earrings - Yardsale ($0.25)

I just think, for one second, I'll point out that yesterday was my birthday.
I've officially hit the ripe old age of 25.
A quarter century old, as my sister so kindly pointed out.

At first I was a little bummed. 25 and I still haven't done so many things that I want to do.
Then, as every lovely lady at church reminded me, I remembered 25 isn't that old at all.
So here's me raising my glass and saying "Cheers."
Cheers to letting the Lord do with this year whatever he has planned.
Cheers to not letting myself get in the way. Ha.
 Cheers to growth.
Cheers to new adventures, new friends, new trials, and new victories.
Cheers to maybe some old victories too.
Cheers to overcoming.
Cheers to Him who has overcome!
Cheers 25! Bring it on!

John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

My Face Has a Mind of It's Own

The fun things about this outfit:
Shirt - Hand-Me-Down, Pants - Thrifted, Shoes - Target

As you can see this shirt is great! These pants are great!
But mostly, you get to see my great facial expressions. Which let's face it... it's real life.
I make weird faces. It's a fact.
I can't help it. My face has a mind of it's own sometimes. You know those times when you're in a group and someone says, "group picture." Everyone gets huddled up and someone with go-go-gadget arms holds the camera out. Snap. Flash. And wait... while they look for the approval of the captured moment. Then with a groan, some one points out my face. "Everyone else is smiling!"

Ooops. I thought it was a goofy one!

And on life goes...funny faces and all!

Colossians 1:15-16
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones ordominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
